23.12

One more day gone. Between baking and packing in more gifts and cleaning once again and putting more decoration on the xmastree I went shopping, leisurely now, found two three books my husband will give me as a present: we each buy the books we want to read ourselves, been doing that for years and than we change books and pack them in nicely, so we get to read what we are curious about, but this year I bought a book with shortstories from Gogol for him which I am sure he will like and will be a surprise (why do I know his taste so much better than he knows mine?) Beause he reads the books I buy and I see what he picks. Because I am the bookwoman in the family. I buy the books (as said before) read them and away they go, either to Monika or my husband. The choice is mine and mostly good. Leisurely I bought this and that - stupid as I am I checked the homebank yesterday and saw that I had money left (!) - and so I had to do some more packing :). Tomorrow I have still one cake to bake, and to make part of the dinner for five. Monika will do the rest. And Marinó will come home at one. Five for dinner? Us couple and Marinó and Monika and Jón Valur and after the meal Eyrún will join us.
This day my father has birthday: Happy birthday dear father, borne 1920 and still fit and around, a long life with many hard times and changes.
Mamma: today Margrét got the fridge and is sooo happy about it. Jochen took it with him to town and Jón Valur helped to carry it up the stairs.
The day begun with me as driver for Margrét and her cat who needed a shave. So first thing in the morning I drove them to the pet's hospital where we left the cat to fetch it again later in the evening and drove on to buy christmas lights. Home again, the christmas tree:
Waiting for things to come

and continued decorating the house.

Later Monika and me went shoppig. Shirts and a tie for Marinó, candles and lots of food:

21.12

My cleaning day is finished and I got the ltittle handsewn xmas napkins on some tables, me and my husband made graflax together and it´s in the fridge, candles are ready to be lit and so on. Outside, as so often, the storm id blowing and hail is battering the windows, it shall get worse tomorrow. So comfortable to sit inside and listen to the weather! In Selfoss the river is running into the cellar of the cinema, the hotel and Nóatúnsbúðin but it should not get worse. A ship is stranded near Keflavík, two days ago already and they can do little but watch it falling to pieces from the shore beause of the storm. Of course they did already rescue the shippers.
And that really are the news. Tomorrow we will go shopping the food, I hope, that will be fun. The list is ready. How organized we are!

Oh, I forgot, I wanted to show you the "before christmas bags "I made for the kids in sandhólaferja, there are toys and sweets and silly things in them

20.12

We would like to change Iceland into waterland. The tempuratures have jumped up to eight, ten degrees C. and snow is melting, ice is melting and heavy rainstorms toement the land. So we got floods in the north and in the south. In selfoss the water is lapping at the river shores. To see more, click on mbl.is.
Today was my last working day until the third of next year. At school we danced around the christmas tree and sang, two jólasveinar (st, clauses) came and danced with us and is was all very nice and christmas nice. Then all the teachers of the school went out to eat at a cold buffet down town and I stuffed myself as I haven´t done for along time and will surely not do for a long time again. But somehow, with a wine glass and nice chattering around I forgot my limits. Monika was my driver and I rushed home and fell into bed, slept, forgot (!) my gym lesson and did without dinner.
Tommorrow I have scheduled to make the house christmas like, do the washing and engage in things like that. In the evening we will cut laufabrauð. Open house, come have a try and a glass of wine!
As for now I will finish knitting and watch tv, after that I will snuggle in bed and read this:
a story set in 1725, very readable and shows the philosophy and understanding of science at that time.
AND the picture of the day, south iceland on a cold and clear day. Eyjafjallajökull, a glacier, the view from my daughter´s kitchen window.

18.12

Still from last weekend: this was adventukaffi at Marínós place with a christmastree from an icelandic forest in the background.

Today was a really long day, starting with a sceduled meeting in school for one pupil, not so hard with cookies and coffee but difficult for all the emotions flying around (not mine though), swimming lesson with the kids, nice but rainy and a really great course for better use of power point from one to five o´clock. I nearly slept in the rope yoga time (don´t tell the teacher) and so I wanted to go early to bed ... and can´t sleep. Now I had a beer, hope it will help. I worry too much, though I try hard not to.

17.12

At about eleven o´clock on this beautifull country we drive east against the snrise (noon?) dawn through

a landscape of fire and ice.
(this we use for heating our houses and generating electricity)

arriving at the farm where even the stable is smiling in christmas mood

to the six's aniversary of grandchild no. 4.

and back again the next day, due west now into the pink sunset at three o´clock.
We went further, but this should be enough for one day. Anyhow, we had a swell time and a long weekend.

And it will be just as cold. Today grandchild no. 4, living there, is six years old: what a remarkeble day! As so often, in a hurry, so have a nice time!

13.12

Though I didn´t go to work today I was quite busy. First ting in the morning I was the driver for Julius and Margrét, the former had to go to the specialist because he hadn´t lost his cold for a too long time. As a roentgen picture showed he has an inflammation of his sinuses and got antibiotica. That all took a loong time. Then I had to to go to a heartspecialist as my latest EKG showed changes (I am overcharged?). After 20 minutes of bycicling I was told that I am fit as a fiddler. So, no excuses, on goes the life. While struggling with the bicycle we talked about Snorri Snorrason who had been this doctor's teacher. So that was that and then I spent two and a half hours in a shoppingmal, first having a coffee with a friend and then I looked for THE christmas outfit which I didn´t find but went home with some frilly blouse. AND bought a present for Monika (now she will search the house, hihihi). One hour at home and a visit of a grandchild and then ropeyoga and a steambath. top fit now. So, the christmas preparations are well on their way, a big envelope for my sister in Norway, a packet to portugal (I must rub it in and make this folks curious!) But no lights up yet :( and no time in view. Tomorrow it´s work again, but we will all go to an advent visit, so that will be nice and easy, hopefully. I am completely ready for the holidays. But who is not. See you

Once there was summer, long ago. Myself and me in June in Kopenhagen, on a boat, drinking beer...skál!

Also morgen.

7.12. Tagged: weird

7.12
I was tagged by my little pinguin minka. Six things “weird” about me.
I should tag others. But I know so few others. Those I blog with h don´t have a blog. So I just will brake the rues! But, read anyhow.

No. One:
I am curious and wanted to know what this cute little word meant, so I went into my big booky like dictionary and as I was too lazy to write I googled:

adj. weird·er, weird·est
1. Of, relating to, or suggestive of the preternatural or supernatural.
2. Of a strikingly odd or unusual character; strange.
3. Archaic Of or relating to fate or the Fates.

Synonyms: weird, eerie, uncanny, unearthly
These adjectives refer to what is of a mysteriously strange, usually frightening nature. Weird may suggest the operation of supernatural influences, or merely the odd or unusual: "The person of the house gave a weird little laugh" Charles Dickens. "There is a weird power in a spoken word" Joseph Conrad.
Something eerie inspires fear or uneasiness and implies a sinister influence: "At nightfall on the marshes, the thing was eerie and fantastic to behold" Robert Louis Stevenson.
Uncanny refers to what is unnatural and peculiarly unsettling: "The queer stumps ... had uncanny shapes, as of monstrous creatures" John Galsworthy.
Something unearthly seems so strange and unnatural as to come from or belong to another world: "He could hear the unearthly scream of some curlew piercing the din" Henry Kingsley.
weird - suggesting the operation of supernatural influences; "an eldritch screech"; "the three weird sisters"; "stumps...had uncanny shapes as of monstrous creatures"- John Galsworthy; "an unearthly light"; "he could hear the unearthly scream of some curlew piercing the din"- Henry Kingsley
eldritch, uncanny, unearthly
supernatural - not existing in nature or subject to explanation according to natural laws; not physical or material; "supernatural forces and occurrences and beings"

No. two:
I Love to learn so I also read all this stuff. Weird, isn´t it?

No. three:
I´ve got angels around me (wrote about them some time ago). Some people do lend them from me, but originally they are mine. They are fat, giggling putties, right in th upper right corner in my vision. Very helpful, funny and loveable. The only thing they ask from me is that I should talk to them and thank them on occasion. No, I am not shizophrenic.

No. four
I once went to a “seeer”: very usual in Iceland, you go there if you have big decisions to make. I for my part was just curious and ready to make fun of it. A “seeer” is somebody with a working line to the deceased. I didn´t make fun of it, I came out rather shocked and white. This man knew things about me even I had forgotten!

No. five
I got a knack for witchcraft, as in “talking to the weather” (yes, and making it change or keep, whatever I want) I got witnesses! Don´t laugh! Of course you only may use these powers for a real, big reason, not for fun.

No. six
And this is the weirdest: I am told to look extremely stupid when I think extremely clever thoughts.

where did this come from?

Where the elves live : Elliðavatn

6.12.

Blogger wil not allow me to get a picture? Still rather sick. Burbling in my lung. Go to work: get home, fall to sleep. wake up, eat, sleep some more. I think I am tired. The grandchildren went home again today, so my house is empty after 3 interesting weeks. Sorry, no pictures today is not my fault. Still, went to rope Yoga. Yust so.
good night.

3.12

I have a good excuse for not sending any pictures, I was some sick last week and slept through a few days. And as it is the first advent I spent yesterday baking.

Here are new pictures: strong women!
